By chance, Carol meets Max, and they immediately take a liking to each other and start dating. As Christmas approaches, Carol needs a recipe for a holiday-inspired dessert in order to get the sous-chef job she wants. The problem is that she’s never liked Christmas and finds it hard to feel inspired. Now Max wants her to come with him to his family’s home for the holidays, and when Carol realizes that his mother has a recipe for the perfect Christmas cake, she lets herself be persuaded—even though she doesn't like Christmas. However, once they arrive, she soon realizes that Max’s mother doesn’t like her and does everything she can to get Max to break off the relationship.
The film, at times, becomes silly and unconvincing. It feels as if events were invented and inserted just to illustrate the plot, but simple solutions were chosen that fail to come across as genuine.
