Johnny lives his life as a mechanic in the United States. Meanwhile, Sir William wishes to renounce his dukedom in England. Next in the line of succession is a relative whom his assistant, Prudence, strongly disapproves of. While going through some papers, she discovers an old marriage certificate and realises, through it, that Johnny is Sir William’s unknown son. She travels to the United States and, at Sir William’s request, invites Johnny to come to England to see if he would like to take on the dukedom. Johnny is highly sceptical of the whole thing, having never known who his father was.
I was sceptical about this one, for obvious reasons. European royalty in romantic films rarely works well. As it turned out, it wasn’t a king but a duke (which doesn’t really make much of a difference), but the film turned out to be slightly better than expected and had a certain charm.
