The publishing house where Sarah works is in desperate need of a new cookbook to stay afloat. When Sarah, who grew up in an Amish community, casually suggests the idea of an Amish cookbook, her boss sends her home for Christmas to develop one. Sarah hasn’t been home for years, having left the Amish life behind. Upon her return, she not only reunites with her family—where her sister runs a bakery—but also meets Dean and his daughter. Dean isn’t Amish but sought refuge in the Amish community after his wife died in a car accident. Sarah cautiously introduces the idea of creating a cookbook based on her family’s recipes.
As a romantic film, this one holds up well. The depiction of the Amish feels a bit more nuanced in this movie compared to others with the same theme. (And yes, it’s better than the poster suggests.)
