To rate movies really comes down to personal preferences and current mood. But still I've tried to rate all the romantic movies I've seen as a guidance to other viewers. I've used a scale from 1 to 6 (see below).
The ratings are not a general measure of the movies cineastic value but purely how good it is as a romantic movie. Of course the quality of the production plays an important part as well as the performances but also that the film delivers a good romantic story.
If you wonder why there are more movies at the top part of the scale than on the bottom half, it might have to do with me avoiding to see some films that I perceive as duds just from the description.
Top recommendations
Frequently I'm asked for the best romantic move and I answer that it is impossible to single out one in such a vast selection. However, under 'Top recommendations' i have chosen a few movies with rating 6 for you to have a something to start with.

These movies have received top rating. This can depend on different things. Either they have an unusually good plot with some unexpected twists or they leave you with an extra warm and positive feeling. They can be rom-coms or more drama but they raise well above the rest as romantic movies.

Here the movies are good and worthwhile. Often e bit better than expected and loads of feel-good and romance and done with some feeling for finesse. I would probably recommend a movie with this rating when asked for a good romantic movie.

Here you'll find the vast majority of the movies. These are average movies that delivers a feel-good story with acceptable direction, acting and a working plot. You will probably like this move (as a romantic movie) but it won't leave you with an everlasting impression.

Movies with this rating are closing in on average but only just. It might be poor direction, poor acting or generally unconvincing. Movies in this rating might work if you can't find anything else to watch but most probably you can find something better to spend your time with.

In these movies you can probably see what they tried to do but utterly failed at. These are most commonly low budget movies that has been spat out from the conveyor belt without any effort put into them. The plot might be flawed or the gender roles brought back from the 1950's.

These movies are real crap. Most probably the production quality stinks and/or the plot leaves you with a bad after taste. Some might have a perverse inclination to watch these just to laugh at all the mistakes or for some self flagellation value. But if you want enjoyment, stay away.
