The year is 1905, and Ella has a plan to start a charitable organisation. However, her father informs her that at the Christmas ball she is to become engaged to a man she has never met. In anger, she takes off in her boat, where she sees a comet and wishes to find true love. Suddenly, there is a man in the boat — Nick — who is just as surprised as she is. They return to Newport, where the year is 2025, something perfectly normal for Nick but not for Ella. Her home is now a museum where Nick works as a historian. They soon realise that she must return to her own time, otherwise her achievements there will be lost. But at the same time, Ella has found Nick.
This type of time travel has the whole concept working against it, and the film’s depiction of 1905 leaves something to be desired. But as a light-weight romantic fairy tale, it’s still okay.
