If you haven't already noticed, there are thousands of romantic movies. Even using my restricted definition of romantic movies I have already seen more than 1.300. But after a while you realize they are substantially less really. You might have got the feeling of "haven't I've seen this picture before". And most probably you have, but with another title, other actors and an other setting. Because, really, there less plots than there are movies movies. Of course there are unique plots but on the other hand one can be amazed by the frequent repetitions. To be clear: when I talk about plot categories it's beyond girl meets boy, they have a mutual attraction, there is a misunderstanding that is threatening their new found love but then everything is sorted. That definition would cover almost all romantic movies there is.
I have also rationalized away plots where a girl returns to her old hometown and rekindle a romance with an old boyfriend. I've also excluded the plot where the main character ends up in a small town or their old hometown to then give up their lives in the big city for love. These lists would have been too long.
Here below you can see some of the different plot categories I've identified with a few examples.
Appointed to be the maid of honor and best man, or otherwise organizing, at the upcoming wedding the main characters soon find that they are expected to perform a lot of tasks together, often to save the wedding. Not easy as they have very different personalities. If they didn't, due to some old history, already dislike each other they soon end up in animosity which over time evolves to a surprise romance.
Desperate to not appear as a failure all alone at the big family gathering or company event the main character invents a fake a relationship with someone they got to know recently. In some cases they even rent a partner. The fake relationship surprises their surroundings and questions are asked making it important to appear like a real relationship, which is not easy. But the surprise soon turns on the main characters.
The main character, or their, relative is running a shop or operation on the verge of closure. The business are slow, they are threatened by competition from a large company, they have been given an eviction notice or the rent has been raised to an unsustainable level. In comes an unexpected, mostly unwanted, help that have new ideas or a brilliant plan on how to save the business. Not uncommonly this help is a representative for the threat itself but has a change of heart when they fall in love.
In a surprise will it turns out that the main character has inherited a property. When he/she arrives to inspect the inheritance, mostly in order to sell it, they realize that, in most cases, they just inherited half the property. The other half has been left to an unknown friend of the deceased or worse by some old boy-/girlfriend who doesn't want to sell at all (alternatively this can also be the house caretaker or farm manager since many years). The inheritance is in dire need of repair an now they have to fix up the place together while they decide what to do. Then one thing lead to another.
Happy to get away on holiday or just to get some peace and quite at a secluded place, the main character arrive at the rented house or cottage only to find that it's double booked. Naturally there's no available alternatives in the entire county so they are forced to spend their time together in the house/cottage/apartment. A very inconvinient arrangement until they start to get to know each other better.
Stranded at the airport, desperate to reach their destination, they soon find out that there is only one available rental car. Alternatively a friend have talked one of them into giving the other a lift. Reluctantly they decide to travel together as they're heading in the same direction. The journey gets complicated, often by the weather and they are forced to do layovers on the way. It's also complicated by their previous history or simply by their different personalities. During the trip though they have to get to know each other better.
The main character gets an opportunity to perform an important service for an unknown kingdom in Europe. This means working closely with the royals and specially the eligible prince, princess or even king. There is a clear difference in social standing which often leads to misunderstandings and sometimes animosities that develops into a surprise romance.
This plot category is named after it's most known example, Groundhog Day. The main character is stuck on the same day and have to relive the same events over and over. It turns out that they must change their ways and also succeed with love to break the loop. But how to do this might not be so obvious. In some cases it's even both the main characters that are stuck in this same day which in some ways makes it a bit easier.
One of the main characters has en accident, most commonly while travelling in a snowstorm, and loses his/hers memory. Not knowing who they are they are helped by the other main character who engages in trying to find out who this anonymous person is. While they're solving this mystery they start to fall for each other (if not the other main character already had fallen, then it's just the one with memory loss that falls). When the one with memory loss conveniently gets his/hers memory back it's just a matter of clearing the fact that they were not married before.
This is category is actually named after the most known version. Two persons get in contact, anonymously, through an internet forum, pen-pal service or similar. They really hit it off. At the same time they meet in real life not knowing who the other person really is. In real life they really dislike each other but constantly meet as they, usually, work together or live close to each other. At the end they finally realize that the fabulous anonymous contact and the obnoxious person are the same.
A new position as manager or partner at the firm is available. Two co-workers, who most commonly dislike each other, have a chance to prove themselves. The competition starts, quite often with their boss assign them to the same project to evaluate their capacity to cooperate. Not a very popular move. But as they are forced to work together and they start to re-evaluate what really matters.
Wanting to get away for a bit they contact a home switching service some vacation time. While living in a new place they meet the friend, neighbour or family member of the one they switched with and romance materialise. It's always romance at both ends except for an odd one off where they fall for each other on a distance.
